Last Year

The old timers were saying that the fishing has not been this good in 50 years. "Better than before the flood!" The fishing this past season was nothing short of fantastic. Every stretch fished outstanding. Dry flies ruled the season. Everyone was pleasantly surprised about the huge number of browns that we caught all season long. The most interesting part? Is that there were a lot of first year browns, and cutthroat, showing up this fall on the South Fork. To us, this means that all those browns along with huge numbers of large and small cutthroats and rainbows will increase the total fish populations in the South Fork by 50% next year and they will all be much larger in 2007.

The fishing season finished as the most consistent dry fly year we have ever seen. Our top notched TVL guides released over 66,000 trout for our guests this season. Most of those caught on dry flies.

In mid September the Palisades Dam reduced flows to do some concrete work. The river dropped little by little everyday for three weeks and caused some changes in the fishing. We began seeing more mid-range size fish than usual. Overall numbers were great, just more little guys. There wasn't a drastic drop during the period so the fishing didn't suffer at all. However, this shouldn't happen in 2007 since the dam work will be completed.

Water Conditions
As the year closes, our reservoirs are near full and will completely fill with the run-off next spring. This means that we will have normal water flows out of Island Park Reservoir which controls the flow on the Henry's Fork and also out of Palisades Reservoir which controls the flow on the South Fork. The free-flowing Teton, will have a perfect water season with lots of deep water for all those gigantic Rainbows and Cutthroat it is so famous for.

What to Expect for 2007
The numbers of fish in the South Fork and Teton have increased this past season and will increase more for 2007. The Henry's Fork has seen a small increase in numbers but is holding it's own very well and we expect to have a "Barn Burner of a Salmon Fly Hatch" in '07. I

At this time there is a lot of snow in the mountains and it is snowing right now. Forecasts are for a heavy winter and lots of wet snow for our region. This is just what we want for 2007. Check out our Timetable article for hatch schedules.

Come see us in 2007 and find out for yourself what "all the hubbub" is about at Teton Valley Lodge.
